You can take a girl out of the city, but you can never take the city out of the girl. Spending three hundred and sixty five consecutive days out of town dosn't seem like that much, not when compared to the five decades Ive lived, but even so, it really hits you how much one town can change. New streets have gone down, new shops have gone up, the night air has a different smell and the whole world seems to have ligtened up.
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.
True, Ive been back for almost two weeks now, but that hardly counts. Mostly its just been moving stuff around, cleaning up the dust thats accumulated over the year, taking care of overdue mail thats been piling up at the post office. Its a huge pain. You'd think the whole place had come crashing to a halt the moment I was outside the city limits.
But now, the real home coming. I stand at the gallery, looking over the hallway. Its neither big, nor lavish. An out of the way hall where half rate artists can get work. Even so, the cost wasnt to bad, and with any luck, a few people would drop by. My kind of people. Im not ignorent, I know full well that Im no shining star in the clan, and I can deal with that. But hay, art isnt a tool for getting social credit. I'd like to think we all outgrew that nonsesne in highschool. So if one or two of my clanmates happen to stumble in, I'll be happy.

Nothing in the City's art community escapes my notice. Even if the events are not connected to my personal investments, some outside artistic venues tend to show some personal interest on rare ocasions. I wouldn't have known that Sophie was back in the City, if her name hadn't shown up on a list of recent open galleries. Sophie is another of my clan residing in the city, but has been away from home for a long time. Though we have only met a couple times, I remember finding her to be a very capable clan member. Her recent return in a lower gallery not with standing. I've been spending my time teaching Demos how to be a vampire, so I figure it's time for a break from the grindstone, a little enjoyment, leaving him in very capable hands... and probably more than one mouth... as I get dressed up to head over to an art show, to welcome my clan member back home properly. I don an evening gown, long and green, keeping my hair down to flow over the bodice, a solid black number that sets off my pale skin well. It doesn't take long for my Mercedes to pull up to the door of the gallery, my driver opening it to let me in. It's a very modest gallery, and mostly human. So far it seems I am the only Kindred in the crowd. Until I see Sophie herself. I don't rush to see her, instead turning my attention to the show itself, her work. I have been wrapped up in my own issues so much lately, that it's hard to believe I haven't been to a show in a week... Demos' show, to be exact, where I was stuck on the main piece, and ended the show before it was ever really enjoyed. Sophie's the woman of the night, with plenty of art critics around to rub elbows with, I plan to enjoy things working up to meeting with her. And her show doesn't let me down. The modest gallery actually lets her work shine well, the presentation taking nothing from the painting themselves. I find allot of my stress unwinding as I look over her work, enjoying every beautiful scene on her canvas. And eventually, as I figured, my wanderings bring me right to her. I give her a big smile,
[glow=red,2,300]"Sophie, Mon Ami! Welcome home! It is good ta see ya back."[/glow]
I pull her into the tradition 'kiss kiss' to cheek motion, before looking her over, spouting off a little 'inside joke' the Kine wouldn't pick up on,
[glow=red,2,300]"Ya 'aven't aged a day! Still looking good Cherie."[/glow]
After flashing an ironic smile at my words, I lean in closer for only her to hear,
[glow=red,2,300]"Interesting place ta show your work. While it does show off de stunning beauty of de paintings on der own, it takes away from de proper... atmosphere your work should be shown in. Are you staying in town awhile?"[/glow]

I open the doors, but there is a noticable lack of crowd gathered outside. To be sure, it would have been quite a suprise had my humble display attracted a mass of eager fans. Realisticly, I was sure that it would be a while before anyone actually appeared on scene. Still, it isnt to long before a trickle of socilites and hobnobbers come in, begining to circulate the room as they talk amongst themselves.
I go to work, exchanging pleasentries and introductions as needed, explaining my work where I can, and recieving whatever feedback was there to be offered. The reception, alas, was not what I'd been hoping for. Oh, make no mistake, there we're compliments and praise to be had, but few present showed any real excitment. My work hadnt spoken to them
It wasa disappointment, to say the least. I'd spent an year abroad, and this collection was built from that. In a way, it seemed almost like I'd wasted my time and my money on a sight seeing trip. I'd probably sell enough to get by, but that had never been the point.
Still, we all learn to deal with lifes little disappointments
Out from the gathered mass, comes one of the Kindred. Indeed, woman approaching is none other than the primogen of my clan. This, it can be said, was certainly a suprise. I never expected to find myself in such esteemed company, certainly not so soon after returning.
She greets me wtih a smile and a flurry of motion, welcoming me home by wrapping my in a brief embrace. I see her give me a quick once over, commenting with just a hint of a smile on my good fortune at avoiding any ill signs of aging. I smirk a little, chuckling to the thought.
"Wel', way I see's it, It only natruel realy, what wif voidin the sun like. Elp's Keep gettin all rinkly. An iffin ya don mine me sayin, ye avn dun to badly fer yerself there. What color s'hat little giddip anyway? Ya wear it well"
My Clan head leans in closly, speaking soft enough to avoid anyone overhearing. She compliments my work, though she says the gallery itself is inadaquate a place for showing them off, asking if Im staying long. I nod in responce.
"Ah, ya to kind luv. I dont mine sayin that I be wishin alf these buggers we're of a similar dispostion. I'll be lucky ta sell a hanful a the rate this be goin .Ah, but that's nun a yer concern.I intend ta be stayin round 'ere for da time bein. Got me things all unpacked en everything. I canno tell ya how nice it be feelin ta be sleepin back in me own lodgin again." I look around, to make sure that all is still going well with the rest of the gathering. Seeing that it is, I return my attention to Lysette
"But anyhows, ya be ri' about this place. Best I could du on short notis. Ya know what they say, begges canno be choosin."
I give a little shurg, making it clear that I don't intend to let my misfortunes get the better of me. The important thing was to keep moving foward, not to dwell on the things that havnt turned out like you wanted.
"But what about yeself? What as ta fines' musician in the city been occupin 'er time wif, if it ain to much a me ta ask"

She jests back, and her accent rolls off her tongue, the sound very pleasing, just hearing her speak the words more pleasure than the words themselves. She answers my inquiries more honest than our kind are known to. It's one thing that shows she's an actual Artiste, and not a Poseur. And when it comes to our clan, that is a merit in the right direction. I gesture down at my gown on her question,
"Oh, this thing? I believe it's called Emerald."
I nod as she tells me she is staying, and just starting out again in our City. This is not the place to voice how happy I am to see another Toreador Artiste contributing to the beauty of my home. She goes on to ask very politely what I've been up to, and I answer her in a moderated fashion. We are among Kine here, so allot of details won't be proper. And allot of my more personal affairs aren't really something to be talking in public on.
"Maise, na' too much fa me. Tings are runnin' well for de company. Ah 'ave many flourishing artists ta keep my attention busy fa years really. And den dere's de business a' my new Progeny. If ya plan ta stay in de City, Ahll 'ave my assistant send ya an invite ta his debute. De Prince has charged me ta trow a party grand enough ta bring prestige inta tings. It would be grand ta 'ave anodder o' de clan dere for de occasion, an' ya could rub some elbows ya won't gather in dis crowd 'ere. "
This may not be the place to discuss such... political things. But most of my words and my accent, not many around us would pick up on the key things we're discussing. Every clan has it's own 'prestigue'... Power and notation. Toreador partys are well known in the Camarilla, it is how we show off the very arts we use to get ahead in our clan with. The Toreador party is usually an affair grand enough to call others of our clan from all over the globe. The more important people that show, the higher the prestige gained by the host/ess. Unless the whole party crashes. If the party is a bomb, the one that threw it will spend centuries living down the gossip. It seems to be interesting timing, that Sophie has shown up just before a major clan event happens in this City. There aren't many of our kind here, so there's usually not enough reason to throw one. I wonder if Sophie's ever attended such a party? It's not polite to ask that though. Bringing my attention back to the present, I look out over the crowd, watching the people stare blankly at the paintings, knowing that their limited human vision can't see the things my eyes see in them. Granted, I'm sure nothing in this room is her best work. I recall a show before she left, where I purchased a few paintings, much better than what I see here. But her work still holds a style that is unusual. I can't put my finger on it. Her style and blend of colors is very unique, even in this set. I would wonder her technique, but I'm not a painter, I'm just a critic of this style of art. And a producer... of course.
"Maise, ya still 'ave de show ta conduct, Ah won' take all ya time from de lovely fans. If dis is jus' a steppin' stone ta gettin' back inta da scene, ya should stop by Black Rose Productions, when dis party is done. Ah bet ah could turn ya on ta bigger tings."
If I offer to commission a bigger show for Sophie, it will benefit me as well as it will benefit her. As Primogen, helping my clan prosper here is well within my interests, and will reflect well on me in any light. I can only hope more time spent working on her art, can produce pieces well enough to put on commission. But, it is something to discuss with her in a different setting. Right now, she still has to make the best of this show. I step back into the crowd to leave her to it, stopping to continue apraising the art on my way to the door.
